Encina, Juan del

Encina, Juan del
(ca. 1468-1530)
Spanish poet, playwright, and musician. He studied law at the University of Salamanca and became a cathedral chorister, but the foundation of his literary career was his service at the court of the duke of Alba, where he was in charge of providing entertainment. He wrote most of his numerous poems and his 14 verse dramas for the court between 1492 and 1500. He also gained an ecclesiastical appointment in 1500 through papal patronage but was not ordained as a priest until 1519.
