Giorgione

Giorgione
(Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, 1475-1510)
Venetian painter of the late 15th century, especially influential because of his use of oil paint. Details of his life and career, and even the dating of his works, are debated. He seems to have studied at Venice under Giovanni Bellini. Three works now universally attributed to him are Boy with an Arrow, Three Philosophers in a Landscape, and The Tempest; not quite so securely attributed is the sensuous Sleeping Venus. The art historian Giorgio Vasari remarked on Giorgione's skill at painting without making a preliminary drawing.
