Rossellino, Bernardo

Rossellino, Bernardo
(1409-1464)
Tuscan sculptor and ar-chitect, active mainly in Florence, Siena, and other Tuscan cities but also able to attract commissions from popes Nicholas V and Pius II.
His most famous work as a sculptor is the tomb he executed for the Florentine chancellor Leonardo Bruni in 1444. He achieved even greater fame as an architect. He worked for both Nicholas V and Pius II at Rome, but his most famous commission was the remodeling of the entire city of Pienza for Pope Pius, who wanted to transform his native town into a model city rebuilt in a classical style.
