Savile, Henry
(1549-1622)
   English historian and textual scholar. Educated at Oxford, he became warden of Merton College in 1585 and provost of Eton in 1596. His principal scholarly works were a collection of early English chronicles, Rerum Anglicarum scriptores (1581) and the first complete edition of the Greek text of the works of St. John Chrysostom (1610-1612). He was also one of the schol-ars involved in preparation of the Authorized (King James) version of the Bible. In 1619 he endowed the Savilean professorships of astron-omy and geometry at Oxford.
